The research behind the 12 Journeys

We're coaches, not researchers, and we'd rather show our sources than ask for your trust. This page lists the principles the journeys are built on, the studies behind each one, how we use it, and — because it matters — the places where the popular version of the science is weaker than it sounds.

In short

  • The journeys apply published findings on habits, self-perception, planning, emotion labeling, self-compassion, gratitude, breathing, connection and retrieval practice.
  • We have not run a clinical trial of the 12 Journeys, and we say so. Member outcomes are self-reported and private.
  • We never invent statistics or testimonials. Every number on this page has a citation you can check.
  • Some popular claims — 21-day habits, growth mindset as a cure-all, power posing, willpower as a fuel tank — are weaker than their reputation, and we don't lean on them.

How we use research

Three commitments. First, every mechanism a journey teaches maps to published work — cited below by author, year and journal so you can read the original. Second, we describe effects the way the studies do: “moderate,” “small but real,” “held at follow-up,” never “proven” or “guaranteed.” Third, we're honest about our own evidence: the 12 Journeys as a program hasn't been independently tested. What we have is members' private before-and-after self-ratings on each journey's two measures, their check-ins and their reports of what they did — real, useful, and not a trial. We will never turn that into an invented percentage.

The principles and their sources

Habits run on context, not decisions

Roughly 45 percent of everyday behavior repeats in the same place almost daily (Wood, Quinn & Kashy, 2002; Neal, Wood & Quinn, 2006), and habits are cued by context and executed with little deliberate input (Wood & Neal, 2007). How we apply it: every journey works on the cue and the environment, not just the intention. What we don't claim: that understanding a pattern removes it.

We learn who we are by watching what we do

Self-perception theory (Bem, 1972) holds that people infer their attitudes and identity partly from their own behavior. How we apply it: the journeys are action-first; the “I am a person who…” statement lands after the act, not before. What we don't claim: that affirmation without action changes anything.

If-then plans and mental contrasting

Implementation intentions had a medium-to-large effect on goal achievement across 94 studies (Gollwitzer & Sheeran, 2006). Mental contrasting with implementation intentions — wish, outcome, obstacle, plan — improved outcomes in field studies (Oettingen, 2014; Duckworth et al., 2013). How we apply it: the Root · Shoot · Fruit exercise and the MAP check (Motivation, Ability, Prompt, each scored out of 10) before any commitment; Giant Crossings planks are if-then plans with a real-world proof step.

How long a habit takes

A new daily behavior took a median of 66 days to become automatic, range 18 to 254, and missing one day didn't materially hurt (Lally et al., 2010). How we apply it: thirty days of daily check-ins to start, streaks that forgive a miss, and echoes at day 3, 14 and 30. What we don't claim: 21 days — that figure traces to a 1960 book by a plastic surgeon (Maltz), not to a study.

Naming the feeling regulates it

Affect labeling reduced amygdala activity and engaged prefrontal regulation (Lieberman et al., 2007; Torre & Lieberman, 2018). Distanced self-talk — using your own name — improved regulation under stress (Kross et al., 2014). How we apply it: the check-in starts in the body and asks you to name what's there before anything else; the Three-A process begins with Awareness.

Self-compassion, not self-criticism

Self-compassion is strongly associated with lower depression, anxiety and stress (MacBeth & Gumley, 2012; Neff, 2003) and experimentally increased the motivation to improve after failure (Breines & Chen, 2012). How we apply it: the Nurture journey, the no-shame copy when a measure doesn't move, and the way falls are scored in Giant Crossings — as information, not failure.

Gratitude and what went right

Weekly gratitude lists improved well-being (Emmons & McCullough, 2003); writing three good things daily raised happiness and lowered depressive symptoms for six months (Seligman et al., 2005). How we apply it: the Gratitude journey and the daily practice tools. What we don't claim: that gratitude lists fix a scarcity pattern on their own — our own writing on the somatic trap says otherwise.

Writing it out

Expressive writing about difficult experiences was followed by fewer health-center visits (Pennebaker & Beall, 1986); across 146 studies the effect is real and small (Frattaroli, 2006). How we apply it: the journal, the Mirror and the reflection at the end of every stage.

Breathing changes state

Slow breathing shifts stress physiology and mood (Zaccaro et al., 2018); five minutes a day of cyclic sighing improved mood more than mindfulness meditation over a month (Balban et al., 2023); meditation programs show moderate evidence for anxiety, depression and pain (Goyal et al., 2014). How we apply it: every RIPPLE lesson begins with Regulate; the Toolwheel's breathing tools are the physiological sigh, box breathing and long exhales.

Connection is not optional

Stronger social relationships were associated with a 50 percent greater likelihood of survival across 148 studies (Holt-Lunstad, Smith & Layton, 2010). How we apply it: the Tribe itself — check-ins reported to people doing the same work, buddies, witnessed crossings.

Retrieval and spacing beat re-reading

Testing yourself on material strengthened retention more than restudying it (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006), and spacing practice over time beat massing it (Cepeda et al., 2006). How we apply it: teach-backs in your own words at the end of each stage, scored against the source, and spaced echoes weeks later.

Small wins and progress

Progress on meaningful work was the strongest driver of a good inner work life across nearly 12,000 diary entries (Amabile & Kramer, 2011). Self-efficacy — the belief that you can act — predicts whether people try and persist (Bandura, 1977). How we apply it: planks sized to be laid on a bad day, and every laid plank made visible.

Vision and the best possible self

Writing about your best possible future self improved mood and, in the original study, health measures (King, 2001; Sheldon & Lyubomirsky, 2006). How we apply it: the Vision journey, and the crossing's “name your vision as if completed” step — always paired with the obstacle, per the mental contrasting research.

Grief has a shape

Most people are more resilient through loss than expected (Bonanno, 2004); healthy grieving oscillates between facing the loss and living (Stroebe & Schut, 1999). How we apply it: the Grief journey walks with a loss rather than fixing it, and says plainly when grief needs a therapist.

Coaching itself

Meta-analyses of coaching in organizations found positive effects on performance, well-being, coping, work attitudes and self-regulation (Theeboom et al., 2014; Jones et al., 2016); life-coaching trials raised goal striving, well-being and hope (Green, Oades & Grant, 2006; Grant, 2003). Therapy's evidence is far larger (Cuijpers et al., 2021) and the alliance is a consistent ingredient (Horvath et al., 2011; Wampold, 2015). What we don't claim: that coaching treats anything. Where the popular science is weaker than it sounds

  • “21 days to form a habit.” Folklore from Maltz (1960). The measured median was 66 days with a range up to 254 (Lally et al., 2010).
  • Growth mindset as a cure-all. Two meta-analyses found small effects of mindset on achievement, concentrated in specific groups (Sisk et al., 2018). Belief helps you start; behavior does the work.
  • Willpower as a fuel tank. The ego-depletion effect failed to replicate in a 23-lab preregistered study (Hagger et al., 2016). We design around cues and plans, not willpower reserves.
  • Power posing. The hormonal and risk-taking effects reported in 2010 did not replicate in a larger study (Ranehill et al., 2015). We use posture for comfort, not chemistry.
  • “Rewiring your brain” as a slogan. Neuroplasticity is real; specific claims about what a given exercise does to your neurons usually aren't measured. We say “pattern,” and we mean behavior you can observe.

Questions people ask

Are the 12 Journeys evidence-based?

They're built on evidence-based principles — published research on habits, planning, emotion labeling, self-compassion, gratitude, breathing, connection and retrieval practice, each cited on this page. The program itself has not been independently tested in a trial, and we say so rather than imply otherwise.

Do you collect outcome data on members?

Members rate themselves on two measures per journey before and after, and can re-rate thirty days later; they also keep private check-ins. That data belongs to the member and is shown back to them. We don't publish it as statistics and we never invent numbers.

Is this mental health research?

It's a curated reading of published research from psychology, psychiatry and organizational science as it applies to behavior change and well-being in functioning adults. It isn't clinical guidance. Why do you point out weak science?

Because a program that leans on a slogan the research doesn't support will eventually let someone down. Naming the weak spots — 21 days, mindset as a cure, willpower reserves, power posing — is how we keep the rest credible.
