The Language of the Tribe: What "Small Self" and "Giant Self" Actually Mean

The Tribe of Giants · July 18, 2026

A person standing at a crossroads between shadow and light, symbolizing the contrast between Small Self old patterns and Giant Self growth

If you've landed on this blog and keep seeing the words "Small Self," "Giant Self," or "old programming" and have no idea what they mean, this post is your glossary — and your entry point.

Small Self, in one sentence

Your Small Self is the version of you operating from old programming: deeply ingrained, often unconscious patterns that dictate your thoughts, feelings, and actions, shaping how you see yourself and the world like old shadows or adaptive parts built for survival. It's not a flaw. It's not weakness. It's a set of automated responses your mind built a long time ago, and it's still running the show more often than you'd like to admit.

You've felt it already, probably today. The subtle tension in your jaw before a hard conversation. The quick defensiveness when someone questions you. The sense of going through the motions — your body present, your spirit somewhere else. That's not random. That's the Small Self, and it's not just a thought. It's a sensation.

Where the programming comes from

You don't start blank. From family, culture, and society, the brain absorbs everything, forming the values and beliefs that establish your truths and predictions about the world — and those predictions become automated. You didn't choose most of this. It was installed before you had the vocabulary to question it, and it became your default operating system.

This is also why the same argument keeps happening, why the same result keeps showing up no matter how hard you try to will your way to a different one. If you find yourself doing the same things, having the same internal arguments, or expecting different results from the same actions, that's a sign your non-conscious programming is running unexamined.

The idea underneath the whole framework

Carl Jung put it plainly: "Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate." That line is the entire premise of Journey One. You cannot change what you are not aware of — so the first move isn't discipline, willpower, or a better routine. It's uncovering the hidden influences running underneath all of that, which is the indispensable first step toward meaningful transformation.

Giant Self: the other half of the vocabulary

If Small Self is old programming, Giant Self is what's possible once that programming is visible instead of invisible — the version of you that gets to choose, rather than react. The 12 Journeys frames this as something you uncover, not something you manufacture: your Giant Self can finally speak its own truth once the hidden influences are named.

Why this is Journey One, not Journey Six

The Non-Conscious Journey is the first of the 12 Journeys and serves as a foundational "root journey." It's inherently foundational, and while it can be explored on its own, it is most powerfully utilized as the initial step in any transformative process — it is the prerequisite for the Journey of Awareness. In other words: you don't skip this one. Every other Journey assumes you've at least started looking at what's running underneath.

Inside the Tribe, this Journey is embodied by Layla, who shows you how to uncover these hidden influences so your Giant Self can finally speak its own truth.

How to actually start: joining and your first journey

Joining the Tribe is free — no credit card required. That gets you the full community (feed, friends, events), private messages and your own profile, a secure account with your progress saved forever, and your first journey free. That first journey, for most people arriving here, is this one: the Non-Consciousness Journey with Layla. You can begin today on the strength of the free tier alone, no purchase required.

Where Rimi fits — and what's free versus what isn't

The Tribe's AI guide, Rimi, sets the tone for the whole relationship in one line: "I'll teach you what I know—but becoming a Giant is up to you." Nobody hands you your Giant Self. You still have to do the work.

Here's the part worth being exact about: Rimi's daily check-ins and teach-back mastery checkpoints, along with Journeys 2 through 12, are part of All-Access, the paid tier at $49/month. The free tier gets you the community and this first journey — it doesn't include Rimi's ongoing check-ins or the rest of the framework. If you want Rimi walking alongside you day to day, and the other eleven Journeys that build on this one, that's what All-Access unlocks.

Start where the vocabulary starts

You don't need to have this framework figured out before you begin — you need to begin so the framework starts making sense. Joining the Tribe is free, with no credit card required, and your first journey — this one, the Non-Conscious Journey with Layla — is free as well. That's enough to find out whether the words "Small Self" and "Giant Self" describe something real in your own life. Journeys 2 through 12, and Rimi's daily check-ins, are there through All-Access when you're ready for them.

Join the Tribe, free, and meet the part of you that's been running things without asking permission.
